China does not intentionally circumvent sanctions imposed by Western countries against Russia, Wang Lutong, director of the European Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said, Reuters reports.

The representative of the ministry stressed that China contributes to the global economy while maintaining normal trade relations with Russia . “China is not a party to the conflict in Ukraine. We don't think it should affect our trade with any country,” — he noted.

In early March, the United States warned Beijing that it would take action if anti-Russian sanctions were circumvented. “China is complying with the imposed sanctions. <…> If they don't comply with the sanctions, we always have <…> means for taking action, — said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

Later, Washington stated that it was concerned about possible material support for the Russian operation from the PRC and again reminded of possible measures. “We have a number of instruments that can be considered, and sanctions— one of the instruments»,— clarified Psaki.

China did not join the sanctions against Russia. Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Yucheng said that the sanctions are counterproductive and only aggravate the situation. He also claimed that they were “adding fuel to the fire.”

The country's foreign minister, Wang Yi, called the West's tough sanctions against Russia unacceptable. “The most severe sanctions can harm both sides and further complicate the situation, increase the contradictions”, — he said, adding that the restrictions also harm other countries not participating in the conflict.

At the same time, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China maintains contacts between the EU, the US, NATO and Russia to create a sustainable security mechanism in Europe .

The Chinese leader noted that Beijing regrets how the situation in Ukraine is developing. According to him, China has always stood for peace, called for the observance of universally recognized norms of international relations and adhered to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
