The ex-official was arrested in the Swedish capital in 2019 and charged with war crimes for executing and torturing political prisoners at the Gohardasht prison in the city of Karaj near Tehran. Nuri's trial began last August.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry called the sentence illegal and contrary to international law. The ministry emphasized that the accusations against Nuri are based on false testimonies of persons associated with terrorists; thus, Stockholm actually acquitted the terrorists and violated its obligations in the fight against them.

The ministry also indicated that Nuri was illegal for He was held in solitary confinement for two years, subjected to pressure and restrictions, Tehran regards this as a violation of human rights and a form of torture.
