NYT learned about US readiness to help supply Ukraine with Soviet tanks

Washington intends to be an intermediary in the transfer of “made in the USSR” to Ukraine tanks, according to The New York Times, citing an American official. The newspaper notes that this will be the first such case in the current conflict.

The decision was made in response to a request from President Volodymyr Zelensky, the source of the publication clarifies. He added that the transfer will begin soon, but did not say how many cars will be sent to Ukraine and from which countries they will come.

Last week, Zelensky addressed the — NATO members and urged them to send tanks and warplanes to Ukraine. The President criticized Western countries for “ping-pong” in the question of “who and how should transfer the aircraft to [Ukraine].”

On Saturday, April 2, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the US Department of Defense will provide Ukraine with an additional $300 million in military assistance.

This aid package will include laser-guided missile systems, Switchblade tactical drones, drones Puma, anti-drone systems, high mobility armored multipurpose wheeled vehicles, custom small and large caliber ammunition, custom machine guns.

According to the Pentagon, the United States has already allocated more than $2.3 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since the administration of President Joe Biden came to power.

In late March, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace called inexpedient supply of tanks and other weapons requiring special training to Ukraine.

“The main focus should be on helping Ukrainians upgrade or find Russian or Soviet equipment that is already in their inventory,” ; he said.

At the same time, Wallace said that the British Starstreak man-portable air defense systems are ready for deployment in Ukraine, since a number of representatives of the Ukrainian military have received appropriate training.
